Core Principles
Teaching your child and watching them grow is such a magical experience! Because every child learns differently, finding strategies that fit your unique learner is essential. Our My Learning Circle team is made up of parents, teachers, and former teachers and we believe that these are the core principles behind impactful, joyful teaching and learning. These practices will help you create learning experiences where both you and your child learn, have fun, and thrive, while laying the groundwork for future learning.
There are many wonderful educational researchers that are discussed in more depth in one of the blogs and much more information in our research section under Insights. I’ve enjoyed reading and learning about best practices in teaching and learning and wrote a very long dissertation on this subject. Many of our blogs will be focused on learning styles and best practices. However, in my opinion, Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development (ZPD) is a framework that is at the core of best teaching practices.ZPD is the space between what your child can do alone and what they can't do yet on their own. Learning happens when tasks are challenging but doable with your guidance and support. As they improve, you gradually reduce support until they can continue independently. This helps their confidence and future learning.
Remember that you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Be proud of all that you do. I know as a parent, a teacher and a professor in charge of teaching future teachers, that parenting and teaching are two of the most rewarding experiences that anyone can experience. Give yourself grace.I know and you know that raising children is a busy, hectic experience. You’ve got this!!
